Aviso / Warning: Sprint Broadband Internet Service

Beware of the big INCREASE in monthly charges for Sprint Broadband (internet service) that began in July, 2009.  Whereas for the last two years I have received my internet connection from Sprint for $59.99 for unlimited usage, Sprint is now charging when you use over 5 gigabytes of data per month.  They sent me a bill for July for an additional $51 (“overage”) for an extra 5 gigabtyes.  From August 7 to today, August 23, they have charged me an additional $235.00.  This was all done without any prior notice to me, the customer.  This is very unethical behavior on the part of Sprint.

After an hour on the phone with Sprint, they agreed to remove the extra charge for both July and August.  But beginning on Sept 7, I am supposed to monitor my usage by going to their web site, in order to avoid any of the overage charges.  I think it will be difficult to avoid overage charges, especially since I have a wireless network for my guests.  By the way, they did not offer to remove the charges until I persisted with my complaint and asked to speak to a supervisor.  I imagine there 100,000’s of customers who may be paying these unjust charges.

I hope that I can find alternative service for high-speed internet. My neighborhood (Esperanza) does not have DSL.  Please post any comments to this topic on my BLOG.  That way everyone can read about the options available for high-speed internet and which ones offer a better plan.

These extreme overage fees are nothing new… A client and friend of mine was charged $420 for ‘excessive bandwidth use’ after viewing the Obama inauguration via streaming video.

Other broadband options include AT&T (good coverage), Centennial wireless and satellite-based HughesNet.

Also, people should be warned about sharing internet access through an unsecured wireless router. Others could be making large downloads of software, music or video content, which along with being illegal, could incur excessive fees for these downloads.

Thanks for the warning…a bit late as in July I purchased a MI-FI hot spot from sprint….It works everywhere I have traveled so far and I have yet to reach the limit. I would LOVE to have information regarding an internet connection on island.
Thanks again, Evie
